Weight loss, from a holistic perspective.

MJ TeckerHi, I’m Mary Jane.

My struggle with weight started like so many others – childhood.

Looking back, I know I used food to soothe stress brought on by overwhelming anxiety about school and my quest for perfection.

No matter how upsetting my day had been, I’d always feel better after a snack.  The more I ate, the better I felt emotionally – at least I thought so.

I went from a normal weight child to an overweight adolescent and, eventually, an obese adult.

Is this your story, too?

Believe me, I know what it’s like.

–  to be in tears, searching the closet for something to wear to work

–  to lose hope in myself

–  to straddle the line between fad diets and starvation

I’ve been there.

Fortunately, in my twenties, I was able to break the cycle. In the period of a year, I lost over 100 lbs.

I wish I could say that my weight loss was the result of following a healthy, nutritious eating plan and making all the right choices. It wasn’t.

Actually, it was the opposite.

Sure, I “lost weight” but during the process, my physical and emotional health suffered a great deal.

Weight loss is just a number – one metric that we hang our self-worth on.

What good is simply changing the number on the scale if we’re not healthy or stable enough to live our best lives?

Ultimately, my journey back to whole health sparked my interest in nutrition.  It inspired me to earn a BS in Health Education and an MA in Holistic Health Studies.

Truth is, successful and sustainable weight loss involve more than simply eating less or eating differently. Underlying issues must be addressed for lasting change and whole-person wellness.

To be clear:  I am not a dietitian or nutritionist. I don’t prescribe diets or treat medical conditions.

I am certified as a Health Coach and Eating Psychology Coach.  I possess an extensive knowledge of nutrition and many dietary theories.
